History
Microcosm to Macrocosm
I have living in Southern California. I was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. I had a BFA of Fine Art at the Ewha Woman's university. I studied abroad in Italia for painting at the Academia di Belle Arti de Firenze. I had a good work experiencing the art of Ars Magna and spiritual journey in Europe.
I came to the United States. I participated in the international program at Cal State Long Beach. Then I joined the Korean Artist Associate in Southern California and held an annual exhibition every year since 1993 until now, I also worked as an illustrator for articles in the Moonhwa Daily Korean newspaper for 3 years. I held solo exhibition and many group exhibitions in California, New York and South Korea. Now I have my own Fine Art Academy called Solas Art Academy. I teach drawing, painting, illustrating as well as computer graphic design to youths, children and adult.
My works are expressions of pure elements: impulsive, spontaneous strokes on the surface of my canvas. My aesthetic unites paint and design with strokes of my unconscious within constraints of composition. I use acrylic paint, combine mixed media, and ink.
Created works through natural shapes, lines and flowing pigments : It’s liberating to pour out abstract figures of realistic objects, transferring what was inside onto the canvas, The evidence of that flow remains on the surface. To express the figure from free exploration of the self is similar in scale like macrocosm and microcosm. Where two opposite colors conflict and smudge into pigments like a wave.
I believe that the universal principles and a certain spirit of nature influence my brush as it follows the rhythmic stroke that automation. Abstract figures emerged; divide the surface, creating boundaries and layers to make abstract painting. The moment I painting, I discover how nature could tie complexity and simplicity in overlaps. I realize that the unusual connection between imagination and reality works associated like butterfly effect. I hope my paintings are remembered for the emotional and defining moments of spiritual beauty in my life and keep flowing out of the world.
Intrinsic Object Metamorphosis
In the process of my works, I am looking for pure elements on the surface of my canvas; draw a multitude of natural shapes and lines through my vision and automatic touch. When pigment water flow itself past or invisibly, the evidence of that flow remains.
My brush follows the rhythm competing in waves that overtake one another and divides the surface and boundary layers on the surface of abstract painting. The moment I start painting, I find out how nature could tied complexity and simplicity together, which was far from obvious. Universal nature is origin of subject and object for my painting that has composited by shape and gesture. Some are diverted in space, but merged in time; others diverted in time but merged in space.
Getting meditation is good for the painting. Through my artwork, I try to bring the meditation of the universal principle. My subject matter is nature, whether it is a traditional landscape or mountain and ocean. I use traditional materials as an idea sketch, ink and brush on rice paper, to capture movement and life — making transfer to on canvas with acrylic painting. Everything is captured in the spontaneous flowing and movement of the opposite color as it meets the surface of canvas. Looking past the obvious, close observation and engagement of the subject is my process.
Sail boat is my subject of metaphor of human as a creature. The challenge is to see beyond the faithful boldness of human in secular world to capture its unique self. Abstract water image can transform a figure or landscape in sense of place by capturing it is metamorphosis of the intrinsic meaning. The ship that had not leaving still has a hope. From the moment the ship start its voyage, life is a curse of suffering and storm. Sometimes in the ocean its experience peace, but it is reliance on the heavenly sky that is not from itself. Capturing a bright light, contrasting from the darkness, that ii have hope and believe in my painting.
